Payments under the spotlight

A PUSH to lift the Newstart allowance will be top of the agenda at an anti-poverty forum in Beulah Park this weekend.

Anti-Poverty Network SA is hosting its annual conference at Clayton Wesley Uniting Church on Friday and Saturday. The event will focus on the advocacy group’s campaign to lift the Newstart allowance from $267 a week for adults. The sum is more than $100 below the poverty line.

Anti-Poverty Network SA coordinator Pas Forgione said the group had been urging local councils to pressure the Federal Government to increase the Centrelink payment for jobseekers.

The conference will include panel sessions on electricity prices, disability and mental health.
