Great spot for getaway

FOR 40 years, Rachael Osborne and her family have told tourists from around the world about why Glenelg is a great place to visit.

Ms Osborne, who owns Seawall Apartments on South Esplanade, says when visitors check-in she is quick to point them in the right direction for a perfect getaway.

“We take them outside (the apartments) and point to the jetty and say that is where you need to go,” Ms Osborne, 47, says.

“I also love the beautiful, clean, safe swimming beaches and being walking distance from Jetty Rd with all the shops and cafes.”

Ms Osborne’s parents, Alan and Sylvia Osborne, started the family business in 1977 before she took over the reins about 20 years ago.

There are 22 apartments with spa baths and balconies that overlook the beach.

A one-bedroom apartment starts at $140 a night, while a four-bedroom apartment is at least $300 for an overnight stay. More than 500,000 visitors have stayed at the apartments since the business started.

“A lot of multi-generational families come in, so the grandma bringing in the kids, who are now bringing their kids because they have stayed in the apartments before … there is a real sense of history here,” Ms Osborne says.

The CoastCity Weekly spoke with Ms Osborne as part of its Love Local campaign, which celebrates the places, faces and spaces that make our community so special.

Ms Osborne says although the demographic in Glenelg has changed and businesses have come and gone, the family-friendly vibe in the area remains.

She says local businesses always try to support each other.

“We had a group of 17 girls stay with us and they went down to Jetty Rd and shopped their little hearts out.”
